VI COMMANDO

L/Sgt. Richard Todd, formerly of the Royal Armoured Corps, served with No.2 Troop of No.6 Commando from, at least, May 1944.

L/Sgt. Richard Todd was Wounded In Action from gunshot wounds to the leg on D-Day 6^th June 1944.  After recuperation in the UK he returned to No.2 Troop in time for the Commandos return to Holland following the German Ardennes offensive.

L/Cpl. Richard Todd was Killed In Action (KIA - by drowning) on 23^rd March 1945 during the offensive over the River to take Wessel, aged 25 years.

Richard was the son of W. H. and Elizabeth Todd, of Horncastle, Lincolnshire. He was laid to rest in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery (Kleve, Nordrhein-Westfalen) Grave 62.A.10.

The inscription on his headstone reads:

‘Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.’
